BACK YOKED 4'?m2f Missionary dating: unequally yoked LIZ -- (enters, begins crossing, sees Amy, covers face) Oh oh! (turns tries to exit unseen) AMY -- (enters reading a book, looks up) Elizabeth! How are you?! LIZ -- (freezes, doesn't turn) Fine. I'm fine. Listen, I have to be somewhere. (tries to exit) AMY -- Say, I waved at you in the mall last night. Didn't you see me? LIZ -- The mall? AMY -- Yes. That was you I saw outside of the movie theaters last night, wasn't it? LIZ -- (stops, reluctantly, mumbles to self briefly, turns) Me? AMY -- Yes. LIZ -- Oh, yes. I guess I was at the mall last night. AMY -- I thought you looked right at me. But when I waved... LIZ -- ...Listen, I'd love to chat, but I have to be somewhere. (turns) AMY -- Who was that guy you were with? LIZ -- (freezes, grimaces) Guy? What guy? AMY -- The guy who was holding your hand. LIZ -- He... I... don't think you know him. See ya... (steps toward exit) AMY -- That was Brad Johnson, wasn't it? LIZ -- (freezes, deep breath) Yes. (turns) Listen, I'm running a little late, (points over shoulder) I really have to go. (turns) AMY -- Elizabeth, Brad Johnson is an atheist. LIZ -- (freezes, deep breath) Is he really? AMY -- He is unless he renounced his belief since last week. LIZ -- (turns) Oh, well, we don't talk about religion much. Listen, can we talk about this some other time? I.... (points over shoulder) AMY -- No. LIZ -- No? AMY -- No. LIZ -- You're not going to make a big deal out of this, are you? AMY -- Out of what? LIZ -- Being unequally yoked with an unbeliever. AMY -- Are you being unequally yoked with an unbeliever? LIZ -- It was just one date. I... AMY -- ...How many dates? LIZ -- Alright it was four dates. What's the big deal?! AMY -- I have a better question. LIZ -- What's that? AMY -- Why would you want to develop and nurture a friendship with a person who despises the one thing that you hold most dear in your life? LIZ -- Well, I wouldn't say that Brad DESPISES... AMY -- ...You were at the same party I was last week when Brad Johnson declared that "God is just a crutch for weak minded people." Weren't you? LIZ -- Yes, I suppose I was. AMY -- So, I repeat the question: Why would you want to develop and nurture a friendship with a person who despises the one thing that you hold most dear in your life? LIZ -- I... I'd rather not say. AMY -- Is it because he's a great kisser? LIZ -- I should have never told you that. AMY -- Well, that's true, isn't it? LIZ -- You've heard of missionary dating, haven't you? AMY -- You don't really think you're going to convert Brad Johnson by dating him, do you? LIZ -- It's possible. AMY -- What's MORE possible is that his atheist ways will pollute your desire to pursue your religious beliefs. LIZ -- That won't happen. AMY -- I think it's already happening. LIZ -- What do you mean? AMY -- What I mean is you're avoiding your Christian friends so you won't have to answer embarrassing questions. Right away, the scales are tipped in favor of HIS religion, instead of yours. LIZ -- (deep breath) I hate it when you're right. You're not the only Christian friend I've been avoiding. I purposely missed midweek service to avoid confrontations. I'm even lying about it. I don't really have anywhere I have to be right now. I was just... (turns) Wait a minute. I do too... AMY -- Where are you going? LIZ -- (exiting) I have to tell Brad Johnson I can't be unequally yoked with an unbeliever. AMY -- (follows) Wait for me. I'll go with you for moral support. ©2013 Bob Snook. Conditions for use: Do not sell any part of this script, even if you rewrite it. Pay no royalties, even if you make money from performances.
