BACK POMPOUS 3'?m4f Prayer, vanity, double-minded LIZ -- (enters with Peg) Wasn't this a great workshop? PEG -- Best one I've ever been to. SUE -- I think so too. AMY -- I really got a lot out of it. LIZ -- Well, before we go our separate ways, would you mind if we pray? PEG -- (pauses, looks at others) Oh, ah, sure. AMY -- Okay. SUE -- Yeah. I'd like that. (all form semicircle facing audience, hold hands, bow heads) LIZ -- (drippingly pious) Almighty and everlasting God, who by thy Holy Spirit didst preside in the Council of the blessed Apostles, and hast promised, through thy Son Jesus Christ, to be with thy Church to the end of the world, who hast compassion upon all men, and who wouldest not the death of a sinner, but rather that he should turn from his sin, and be saved; Mercifully forgive us our trespasses; receive and comfort us, who are grieved and wearied with the burden of our sins. Thy property is always to have mercy; to thee only it appertaineth to forgive sins. Spare us therefore, good Lord, spare thy people, whom thou hast redeemed; enter not into judgment with thy servants, who are vile earth, and miserable sinners; but so turn thine anger from us who meekly acknowledge our vileness, and truly repent us of our faults, and so make haste to help us in this world, that we may ever live with thee in the world to come. We give thee humble thanks for that thou hast been graciously pleased to preserve thy servants who desireth now to offer praises and thanks-givings unto thee. Grant, we beseech thee, most merciful Father, that we, through thy help, may both faithfully live and walk according to thy will in this life present, and also may be partakers of everlasting glory in the life to come, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (all others applaud, three people in audience give a bouquet of flowers, a trophy and a framed plaque to Liz) SUE -- That was the most beautiful prayer I've ever heard! AMY -- I've never heard anything like it! PEG -- Absolutely exquisite! LIZ -- Thank you. You're very kind. I love to pray aloud. (backs toward exit) Well, I guess I'll be going. Bye bye. (all wave) SUE -- Bye Bye. AMY -- See you. PEG -- It's been a pleasure. SUE -- (turns to others) What did she just pray for? AMY -- I have no idea. PEG -- I didn't understand a word she was saying. (all stroll toward exit) PEG -- Do you think God heard her prayer? SUE -- I don't think she was praying to God. PEG -- Me either. SUE -- Do you think she'll get what she wants? AMY -- I think she already got what she wanted. ©2013 Bob Snook. Conditions for use: Do not sell any part of this script, even if you rewrite it.
