BACK OMISSION 4'?m2f Sins of omission, ministry (sound cue: door bell) AMY -- (enters running, crosses to far exit) I'll get it. (exits) LIZ -- (enters) Who was at the door? AMY -- (reenters carrying shoe box) A package for you. LIZ -- From who? AMY -- I asked him, but he said you'd know who sent it after you open the package. LIZ -- (takes package) This is all very mysterious. It smacks of international intrigue. AMY -- (backs away) In that case, I'll just keep my distance until you open it. LIZ -- I wonder who would send me a package without a return address. (holds box next to ear, shakes it) AMY -- I wish you wouldn't shake it like that. It might go off. LIZ -- Don't be silly. I don't have any enemies... Or do I? (opens box cautiously) AMY -- (steps back) LIZ -- Hmmmm. AMY -- (craning neck) Well, what is it? LIZ -- Paper. AMY -- (approaches) Paper? LIZ -- Little slips of paper. AMY -- (approaches) No explosives? LIZ -- No. AMY -- No mysterious white powder? LIZ -- No. (lifting pile) Just lists of things. And a Bible verse on top. AMY -- A Bible verse? LIZ -- Yes. AMY -- I'm not comforted. During the civil war John Brown quoted Bible verses just before he slaughtered people. What does the Bible verse say? LIZ -- James 4:17 "Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins." AMY -- (approaches, tries to read) What does that have to do with the lists? What's on the lists? LIZ -- All different things. Some of the lists have people's names. And some of the lists look like TO-DO lists. AMY -- Do you know the people on the lists? LIZ -- Yes. All of them. This is odd! AMY -- What's that? LIZ -- They go together. AMY -- What goes together? LIZ -- These things on the TO-DO lists have to do with the people's names. AMY -- What do you mean? LIZ -- This is very strange. Some of these TO-DO items... in fact ALL of these TO-DO items.... (closes box quickly) Nevermind. (turns) It's nothing. AMY -- (runs into Liz's path) What do you mean it's nothing?! You're turning pale! LIZ -- It's nothing really. (tries to exit) AMY -- (resists) Well, at least tell me who the box is from. The delivery guy said you'd know who it's from when you open the package. LIZ -- I'm so embarrassed. AMY -- Embarrassed?! Why? LIZ -- This box is from God. AMY -- YOU got a box from GOD?! LIZ -- Yes. AMY -- And you're embarrassed?! LIZ -- Yes. AMY -- Why? LIZ -- These lists, these TO-DO lists and these peoples names... These are all things I thought about doing for these people but I put them off or I just plain decided they were too much trouble to do. AMY -- A whole BOX full? LIZ -- Oh, sure, kick a fellow Christian when he's down. AMY -- I'm sorry. But why would God do that? Why would he send you a list of things you haven't done? LIZ -- These are my sins of omission. As James said in this Bible verse, "Anyone who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it sins." AMY -- Boy! You sure have a lot of sins of omission! LIZ -- Thanks for all your support. (sound cue: door bell) AMY -- (turns, steps toward door) I'll get it. (stops, gasps, exits opposite) On second thought, you get it. LIZ -- Why? AMY -- (stops, turns) It's the same delivery man. I think he's got a box for me. (exits) LIZ -- (exits opposite) Wow! Look at the size of THAT box! ©2013 Bob Snook. Conditions for use: Do not sell any part of this script, even if you rewrite it.
