BACK MONUMENT 3'?m2f Salvation, ministry, works vs grace AMY -- (enters pulling liz by the elbow) Right over here. LIZ -- Where are you taking me?! I've already seen all the landmarks in Washington, D.C.! AMY -- (points broadly up and down with hand toward audience back wall) There. LIZ -- (inspects imaginary monument from bottom to top) The Washington Monument? AMY -- Yes. LIZ -- I've already been there. AMY -- You want to buy it? LIZ -- Buy it?! AMY -- Yes. LIZ -- BUY the Washington Monument?! AMY -- Yes. LIZ -- No! I'm not going to BUY the Washington Monument! AMY -- Why not? LIZ -- Well, I can think of three reasons right off the top of my head. AMY -- I'm listening. LIZ -- First, it's not for sale. Second, even if it was for sale, there's no way I could afford it. Did you see how many millions of dollars it took just to refurbish it?! AMY -- You said there were THREE reasons why you wouldn't BUY the Washington Monument. LIZ -- Why would I want to BUY it when it already belongs to me? AMY -- It already belongs to you? LIZ -- Yes. As a citizen of this country, I am part owner of ALL the possessions of the United States. Why would you think I would want to BUY something that already belongs to me?! AMY -- Those are good arguments. Don't they also apply to your salvation? LIZ -- You're not making any sense. AMY -- Isn't your salvation exactly the same as the Washington Monument? LIZ -- How? AMY -- First, it's not for sale. Second, even if it was for sale, there's no way you could afford it. LIZ -- Well, I guess you're right about that. AMY -- And what about your third reason? LIZ -- My third reason. AMY -- The third reason you gave for not wanting to buy the Washington Monument. LIZ -- Oh. Because it already belongs to... me... (pauses) Oh. (scratches head) Oh. AMY -- What's the matter? LIZ -- I've been acting like I'm not a citizen of Heaven, like I'm on the outside looking in, like I have to BUY my way back in. AMY -- When was the last time you read the Book of Galatians. LIZ -- The Book of Galatians?! AMY -- Yes. LIZ -- Is that supposed to mean something to me? AMY -- If you read the Book of Galatians once in a while, you wouldn't be trying to buy something that already belongs to you. LIZ -- This is not just about the Book of Galatians. You've been after me for months to read my Bible. AMY -- How would YOU feel if you created the universe and then the creatures you created didn't read their owner's manual? LIZ -- I'd think they were pretty stupid. Listen, I'm sorry. I didn't realize. AMY -- If you don't read your Bible, you forget how much God loves you and how much he bought for you. (exiting) Come on. I have a Bible in the car. It will only take a few minutes to read the Book of Galatians. LIZ -- (exiting) Yes. It's about time. AMY -- Literally. ©2013 Bob Snook.
