BACK CONFESS2 3'?m1f Monologue: backsliding, confession, prayer (enters self-consciously, points back to exit) They asked me to say a few words about.... (reaches into pocket, pulls out cell phone) Oh, dear, I forgot to turn this thing off. I'm sorry. (reads screen) Oh, ah,... It's from my neighbor. I'd better take this. (pushes button on phone, puts it to ear) Hi, Valerie. What's wrong? Yes, I'm at church. I know you wouldn't call me if it wasn't important. What's wrong? Ashley? She's here at church with me. Last night? Of course I know where she was. I dropped her and her two friends at the bowling alley. They bowled three games and then they played some video games in the arcade there. Last night? The movie theater? No, I think you're mistaken. You're sure it was Ashley? I mean... Yes, Emily and Elizabeth were with her. What on earth was she doing in the movie theater?! That's an "R" rated movie! I told her explicitly that she was not allowed to see that movie! (sighs) That really makes me mad! No, not at you. No, I'm glad you called. I'm sure you would want to know if something like that happened to you. Yeah, I'll call you after the dust settles. Thanks for calling. (pockets phone, sighs) Can you believe it?! After I refused to let my daughter see an "R" rated movie, she goes ahead and sees it anyway! And then she lies about it! No wonder she was so quiet when she got home last night! (paces) What am I going to do? If I confront her, it will turn into a war of words and it will take weeks for the wounds to heal! On the other hand, if I don't confront her, she'll just go on avoiding me and compounding her lie, like she did last night. (stomps) I hate it when she puts me in a position like this! (paces) She knows I love her and only want what's best for her. She knows I'm wiser and more experienced. She usually includes me in her decisions. She even asks me my opinion about things. I really treasure that relationship. But now, if she doesn't own up to this, she'll keep withdrawing from me. I can't let her withdraw from me! I want to be part of her life! (stops) Okay, here's what I'll do. I'll give her a short time to admit what she's done. If she does own up to it, this whole situation could actually be a character building experience. On the other hand, if she doesn't confess and repent of her misdeeds, it would be sinful of me to allow her to compound her sins by covering up with more lies and avoidance. No. I can't let her get away with it. Our relationship is too important to me. Sometimes you have to be tough to show your love. And neither one of us is going to enjoy it if I have to get tough with her! But it's what I have to do! (sighs) Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to involve you in my family problems. Let's see. Where was I? Oh, yes, they (points to exit) asked me to explain to you why God wants you to confess your sins to him... (exiting) But, I guess I just did that. ©2013 Bob Snook.
