ELIZBETH 4'0m1f Monologue: Elizabeth, John the Baptist & Jesus

ELIZABETH -- (enters wearing tunic and headdress, obviously
pregnant) Thank you all for coming. There's been a lot of rumors
floating around and we wanted to tell you all what REALLY
happened. You'll forgive me if I'm not good at this. My husband
usually does the talking for our family. But he's been unable to
speak for several months.

Oh, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Elizabeth. Both my
husband Zechariah and I are from the tribe of Levi, so our
family is dedicated to serving in the temple. My husband is a
descendant of Aaron, so he is one of the priests who performs
the rituals in the temple.

Now, most of you know that Zechariah and I have been unable to
have a baby. So, let me say at the outset that I have not been
unfaithful to my husband and this (strokes belly) baby was not
conceived out of wedlock. This is Zechariah's baby. But this is
no ordinary baby. This is a baby like the one born to Abraham
and Sarah, our ancient ancestors. Their baby was born of a
miracle too.

Let me explain. While my husband was doing his duty in the
temple a few months ago, the Angel Gabriel appeared to him and
told him not only that we were going to have a baby, but the
baby would grow up to be a great prophet. Now, all of you know
that it's been about 500 years since our nation has had a true
prophet. So, Zechariah thought the whole thing was a joke. He
didn't believe the angel at all. So, the angel made him mute for
the next nine months. Zechariah won't be able to speak until
after the baby is born. That's why I'm doing the talking today.

What I'm telling you is what the angel told my husband, that
this baby is Israel's next prophet. Zechariah and I have been
instructed to feed this baby a special diet and dress him in
special clothes that will set him apart for the Lord's work.

Now, I can see that some of you are getting ahead of me. You're
asking yourselves, "Could this baby be the prophet spoken of by
the Prophet Isaiah, who is supposed to announce the arrival of
Israel's coming messiah?"

The answer is YES. How do I know? Because I know the messiah
will be born just a few months after my baby is born. And I know
that the messiah was conceived miraculously, just as my baby
was. The mother of the messiah was a virgin when her baby was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, just as the prophets said she
would be. How do I know all this? Because the mother of the
messiah is my cousin. Her name is Mary. Her family is from the
tribe of Judah, just like the Prophets said he would be. Mary is
betrothed to a man named Joseph who is also from the tribe of
Judah. So, both of the messiah's parents have ties to the tribe
of Judah, just as the prophets predicted.

Now, I hope that clears up all the rumors. But, what's more
important is the fact that the messiah our nation has been
waiting for for thousands of years will be born in just a few
months. And according to the Prophet Isaiah, he will be called
"Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of

Joy of Joys! My son is the one spoken of by the Prophet Isaiah
as "A voice of one calling: 'In the desert prepare the way for
the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our

(exiting) Come, let's celebrate the coming of the messiah, the
savior of the world!
