SPOOK02 23' SPOOK911 episode: hostages

EXT NIGHT WIDE: COUNTRY CLUB PARKING LOT

                             NANNY

(exits car wearing a long dress with long sleeves and high
heels, goes around to passenger side, looking around constantly,
opens door, Katie doesn't exit, Nanny motions for Katie to exit
car, Katie pauses, exits car wearing a party dress.)

                             KATIE

Why won't you talk to me, Nanny?

                             NANNY

What good does it do to talk to you? You ignore everything I
say. I tell you that you can't go to the fall dance because
you're still grounded. And, yet, here we are at the fall dance.

                             KATIE

My mom said I could go.

                             NANNY

Tell me how it happens that your mom doesn't call or write for
over a week, but suddenly we get a package from her containing a
party dress and shoes with a note commanding me to let you go to
the dance. Isn't that a coincidence?!

                             KATIE

So, you're mad at me for involving Mom?

                             NANNY

Katie, you know that's NOT my biggest concern!

                             KATIE

You're worried that somebody will kidnap me.

                             NANNY

I'll bet you never even mentioned the word kidnap to your
mother, did you?

(motions, walks to trunk)

                             KATIE

(follows)

It's the fall dance. What could go wrong at a dance?

                             NANNY

Too many entrances and exits, too many strangers, not enough
security guards. The waitresses and the bus boys haven't been
vetted. Should I go on?

(opens trunk)

                             KATIE

(sees the array of weapons and electronic gear in the trunk)

Wow! What's all this?!

                             NANNY

Your dad bought all of these things to keep you safe in
conditions like these. You know that locket your dad bought you
for your birthday?

                             KATIE

Yeah.

(looks down, holds locket)

                             NANNY

He told you never to take it off.

                             KATIE

I know. I've never taken it off since my birthday, not even in
the shower. What does that have to do with all...

(points)

this stuff?

                             NANNY

He got that locket from this trunk.

                             KATIE

You're kidding.

                             NANNY

No. Hidden inside that locket is a GPS locator that tells me
where you are at all times.

                             KATIE

But this locket is empty.

(opens locket)

See?

                             NANNY

The GPS is built into the locket. It's empty because I needed
space in it for...

(lifts a tiny box from trunk, opens it, reveals what looks like
an in-ear hearing aid)

this.

                             KATIE

A hearing aid?! I'm not deaf!

                             NANNY

It's not a hearing aid. It's called an earwig. It's a two way
radio.

                             KATIE

Why do I need a two way radio in my locket?

                             NANNY

Just in case we get separated, I may need to communicate with
you. So, in an emergency -- any emergency -- the first thing you
should do is insert this earwig into your ear. Got it?

                             KATIE

Got it.

                             NANNY

(offers earwig)

Got it?

                             KATIE

(takes earwig, encloses it in locket)

I got it, Nanny, you can count on me.

                             NANNY

One more thing. In an emergency, you will be tempted to be a
hero. Don't... repeat... do not try any heroics until you hear
from me.

                             KATIE

Of course. We're partners.

                             NANNY

(closes trunk, exiting frame with Katie)

If you go to the ladies room, I go with you.

                             KATIE

You don't have to go into the stall with me, do you?

INT NIGHT WIDE: COUNTRY CLUB DANCE FLOOR

(Kids dance to "YMCA", then music slows, all the while Nanny
constantly scans the room during the whole scene, Katie
slow-dances with a boy, Nanny approaches Katie.)

                             LEROY

(intercepts Nanny smiling)

Well, look at the nanny all spruced up! I've never seen you in a
skirt before!

                             NANNY

Yeah, well, cherish the moment. If I have my way, it will never
happen again.

                             LEROY

May I have this dance?

                             NANNY

I came here to chaperone.

                             LEROY

Come on! Loosen up. It's a party! Live a little!

(extends hand)

                             NANNY

Okay. One dance.

(they dance, Nanny scans the room, Leroy slides his hand up and
down Nanny's back)

                             LEROY

Is this a back brace you're wearing under your dress?

                             NANNY

No. It's a bullet-proof vest. It goes with the nine millimeter
Biretta semi-automatic I have strapped to my thigh.

                             LEROY

(looks at watch, backs away)

Oh, look at the time!

(points to exit, exits)

I have to... be... some... where...

                             NANNY

(smiles briefly, then looks panicked, head on a swivel, looking
for...)

Katie?!

(exits frame running)

EXT NIGHT WIDE: COUNTRY CLUB PATIO

                             NANNY

(approaches three other adults in party clothes)

Have you seen Katie Worthington?

                             WOMAN1

No. Have you seen Candie Helmsly?

                             WOMAN2

We were looking for our kids too. We checked the restroom.
They're not in there either.

                             NANNY

When did you last see them?

                             WOMAN1

I... I don't know. Inside, I guess.

                             WOMAN2

Yeah, inside.

                             NANNY

None of you saw them leave the dance floor?

                             WOMAN1

No.

                             WOMAN2

Me either.

                             NANNY

Last I saw Katie, she was talking to a waitress at the punch
bowl.

                             WOMAN1

Now that you mention it, I saw mine talking to a waitress too.

                             NANNY

(raises hand)

Excuse me?

                            BUS BOY

(enters frame)

Yes, maam?

                             NANNY

Where is the waitress who was stationed at the punch bowl?

                            BUS BOY

Oh, we don't have a waitress stationed there.

                             NANNY

Rats!

                            BUS BOY

I can fetch someone for you.

                             NANNY

No, thank you.

(to parents)

I think something happened to them!

                             WOMAN1

You mean like smoking or drinking or drugs or something?

                             NANNY

Worse.

                             WOMAN2

What do you mean?!

                             NANNY

(cell phone buzzes, pulls out phone from bra, reads phone
screen. It reads "FORWARDED". Walks away, puts phone to ear,
feminine voice)

Worthington Residence.

                           BAD GUY

(voiceover, electronically modified)

Mrs Worthington?

                             NANNY

Yes, this is Elaine Worthington.

                           BAD GUY

We have taken your daughter hostage.

                             NANNY

Please don't hurt my daughter!

(digs into pocket, pulls out second cell phone, dials 911, both
phones to ears)

                              911

(voiceover from the other phone, softly as Bad Guy gives the
instructions)

I'm sorry, all emergency phone lines are busy at this time.

(Nanny grimaces, drops phone to side)

If you have an emergency, please stay on the line. Otherwise,
please call 555-4168.

                           BAD GUY

(simultaneously with 911)

If you want her back alive put $100,000 in a paper bag and drop
it into the trash can at the entrance to the city park at the
corner of Elm and Seventh Street. Do you understand?

                             NANNY

Please don't hurt my daughter!

                           BAD GUY

Do you understand?!

                             NANNY

Yes. Let me see. I put $100,000 in a paper bag.

                           BAD GUY

Drop the money into the trash can at the entrance to the city
park at the corner of Elm and Seventh Street. Do you understand?

                             NANNY

The trash can in the park at Elm and Seventh Street?

                           BAD GUY

That is correct.

                             NANNY

We don't have that much money in the house. And the banks are
closed. It may take two or three hours to borrow that much money
from friends.

                           BAD GUY

You have one hour.

(click, Nanny pockets phone, other cell phones ring on patio,
parents answer phones one by one. Nanny kicks off shoes, runs to
parking lot, lifts dress over head, tossing it aside, revealing
black knee length body suit with pistol strapped to thigh)

EXT NIGHT WIDE: COUNTRY CLUB PARKING LOT

                             NANNY

(phone to ear, opens trunk, revealing an arsenal of weapons and
gadgets, opens cases, pockets gadgets, inserts ear plug into
ear, dawns black ski mask, rope loop over shoulder, all while
speaking on phone)

                              911

(voiceover)

911 emergency. What is the nature of your emergency?

                             NANNY

I have inside information into the kidnap for ransom of children
from Hillcrest Country Club. Please patch me into the watch
commander assigned to that response.

                              911

I'm sorry, we don't have any reports of a kidnap for rans... Ah,
wait a minute. We have more calls coming in now. I'll patch you
through.

INT MORNING SPLIT-SCREEN: COMMAND TRUCK

(Two way phone conversation)

(pause)

                            GRIMLY

This is Lieutenant Grimly. You have inside information about a
kidnap for ransom in progress?

                             NANNY

Yes, my name is Butch Bellamy.

                            GRIMLY

A woman named Butch?

                             NANNY

Stay focused. I am the body guard of one of the hostages and I
have already prepared for this emergency.

Here is the SIT-REP at this moment:

                            GRIMLY

SIT-REP?

                             NANNY

Just listen! I know of at least four hostages confirmed.

(pulls second cell phone from pocket, pushes buttons, screen
shows map and blinking red target)

The hostages are being held... at... at the Hillcrest Academy...
on the third floor.

                            GRIMLY

(writes, points at writing for Sarg, nods)

How could you possibly know all that already?!

                             NANNY

Listen up! You will want to set up your SWAT command post on the
corner of Hillcrest and Oak Streets.

                            GRIMLY

You can't tell us where to set up!

                             NANNY

Just listen. I am now about a mile from the school, so by the
time you get here and set up your command post, I will have an
updated SIT-REP for you.

                            GRIMLY

YOU will have a SIT-REP for me?!

                             NANNY

Just listen. At the corner of Hillcrest and Oak Streets, is a
U.S. Mail drop box. I have taped an envelope to the underside of
that box containing blueprints of the school and suggested
approaches to the building and entry points for a hot breach.

                            GRIMLY

You've got to be kidding me!

                             NANNY

Whatever you do, do not enter the building until you hear from
me. I will call you from inside the school.

(pockets phone)

(end split-screen)

                            GRIMLY

You can't go into the school!

(to Sarg)

She hung up. Who does she think she is?

                             SARG

(shows map)

Lieu, it looks like the best place to set up our command post is
here at the intersection of...

(points, reads map)

                          GRIMLY & SARG

...Hillcrest and Oak Street.

                             SARG

How did you know?

                            GRIMLY

The woman on the phone told me.

                             SARG

A woman?

                            GRIMLY

Look up a woman named Butch Bellamy for me.

                             SARG

A woman named Butch?

                            GRIMLY

Just do it!

INT NIGHT CLOSE-UP: CRAWL-SPACE

                             NANNY

(lifts ceiling tile, sees Katie sitting on the floor against the
opposite wall at the end of a row of four kids, whispers)

Katie, if you remembered to put that earwig into your ear, do
not look at me, do not look for me, do not answer aloud. Just
touch your ear with your finger CASUALLY.

INT NIGHT SPLIT-SCREEN: CLASSROOM

(Katie casually pushes the hair behind one ear, looks around)

With your fingers, tell me the total number of bad guys you saw
tonight.

(Katie puts hand on leg, shows four fingers)

Total number of hostages?

(Katie shows four fingers on both hands)

That means they split the hostages into two groups of four?

(Katie nods slowly)

How many bad guys in the room with you?

(Katie shows one finger)

I'm assuming the other room has one bad guy guarding them too?

(Katie nods slowly)

How many bad guys in the hallway?

(Long pause: Katie shows one finger, shrugs slowly)

It's okay. I disabled one bad guy down on the first floor.

(Jump cut: bad guy is tied up, mouth taped shut sitting beside
the mops and buckets in the janitor's closet)

That leaves only one of them outside in the hallway.

Alright, Katie, you wanted to do more dangerous justice
projects. In about three minutes you will have what you want.

(Katie suppresses a smile, looks to see if anyone is watching)

Are you ready?

(Katie nods)

Wait for my command.

(Nanny drops ceiling tile in place)

(end split screen)

(phone to ear)

INT NIGHT SPLIT-SCREEN: COMMAND TRUCK

                            GRIMLY

(phone to ear)

This is Lieutenant Grimly.

                             NANNY

(crawling slowly)

This is Butch Bellamy. I assume your command post is in position
by now.

                            GRIMLY

Well, if it isn't Lieutenant Buttercup Bellamy!

                             NANNY

Don't call me Buttercup. Only my mother calls me Buttercup. Do
you want my SIT-REP or not?

                            GRIMLY

Your military record said you were kicked out of Delta Force.
But it doesn't say why, BUTTERCUP.

                             NANNY

My commanding officer called me Buttercup, so I fed him his
teeth. Now, can we focus on my SIT-REP?

                            GRIMLY

I'm listening.

                             NANNY

We have eight hostages confirmed, four each in two adjacent
rooms on the third floor southwest corner of the building. There
is one perp inside each room plus one perp guarding the third
floor hallway confirmed. The final perp, who was guarding the
first floor main entrance, has been disabled and is tied up in
the first floor janitor closet.

                            GRIMLY

(points to computer)

I'm looking at the diagrams you left for us under the mail drop.
We can do a soft breach through the back entrance and up the
back stairs; then a hot breach through the...

                             NANNY

Negative. Negative. Give me ten minutes.

(pockets phone)

                            GRIMLY

Ten minutes?! For what?

Hello?

She hung up.

(pockets phone)

(end split screen)

                             NANNY

(lifts a ceiling tile revealing the guard in the hallway)

Katie, things are going to have to happen quickly, so I need you
to listen carefully. We need to get the attention of the guard
in your room. Do your ghost thing and turn the knob on the door
and then let it go.

INT MORNING SPLIT-SCREEN: CLASSROOM

(katie casually pantamimes the turning of the door knob)

(special affect: knob turns, returns)

                             NANNY

When the bad guy approaches the door to see who's outside, you
pull the door open hard.

(Perp approaches door cautiously, peaks out through window in
door. Katie pantamimes the grabbing of the door knob and pulling
the door, eyes squinting in pain, small movements.

(Special affect: Door slams perp in the face. Birds chirp)

(Perp passes out backward. The kids rush to take his gun and sit
on him. Katie remains seated)

Katie, the bad guy in the hallway is on his way to your class
room. When I count down to zero, slam the door closed. Three,
two, one, zero.

(Perp appears in doorway. Katie squints, joins hands and makes a
subtle CPR motion toward the door.)

(Special affect: Door slams perp in the face. Birds chirp)

(Perp passes out backward.)

Katie, you and the kids pull that bad guy out of the hallway
into the classroom. Leave the door ajar and take cover across
the room.

                             KATIE

(stands, crosses to door)

Kids, help me pull!

(opens door, kids pull perp into classroom)

                             NANNY

Katie, in just a moment the bad guy in the other classroom will
come and see what happened to the guard in the hallway. When I
count down to zero, you slam the door shut.

(end-split screen)

INT MORNING WIDE: HALLWAY

                             PERP

(opens door, pokes barrel of gun out, shouts)

Number Three, what's going on out there? Number Three? Number
Three?

(pokes head out, looks both ways)

Number Three! You're not supposed to leave the hallway. The boss
is going to be mad at you.

(turns)

You kids stay right where you are. If you move, boom. Stay.

(steps into hallway, creeps toward other classroom)

Number Three, where are you? You're not supposed to leave your
post without permission. Number Three? You are in big trouble
now! The boss is going to cut your share of the ransoms.

                             NANNY

(voiceover)

Katie, the bad guy from the other classroom is on his way to
your classroom. When I count down to zero, slam the door closed.

                             PERP

(approaching door)

Number two, have you seen number three? Is he in here?

                             NANNY

(simultaneously)

Three, two, one, zero.

(Katie grits teeth, squints, joins hands and makes a subtle CPR
motion toward the door.)

(Special affect: Door slams perp in the face. Birds chirp)

(Perp passes out backward.)

Katie, you and the kids pull that bad guy out of the hallway
into the classroom. Then, send the kids down the back stairway
to the first floor.

(phone to ear)

Lieutenant Grimly, Code Four third floor. All secure. All four
kidnappers disabled. The hostages are on their way down the back
stairway. Go for soft breach.

INT NIGHT TWO-SHOT: TOWN CAR

(Nanny and Katie enter and close doors, Nanny mounts her cell
phone on the dashboard)

                             KATIE

Can I talk now?

                             NANNY

You may talk now.

(starts engine, drives)

                             KATIE

Why didn't we go out the front entrance with the other kids?

                             NANNY

Because I didn't want them to see me.

                             KATIE

Why didn't you want them to see you?

                             NANNY

What were the other kids saying about what happened?

                             KATIE

They said a ghost pushed the door closed and knocked out the bad
guys. Oh! If they saw you, they would think YOU did it by remote
control!

                             NANNY

Exactly.

                             KATIE

So, you want them to think a ghost did it!

Casper the friendly ghost!

(cell phone rings)

                             NANNY

(pushes button)

Nanny speaking.

INT NIGHT SPLIT-SCREEN: CLASS ROOM

                            GRIMLY

(stands over three kidnappers all of whom are hog-tied with duct
tape)

Bellamy! Where are you?

                             NANNY

I'm in my car.

                            GRIMLY

I thought you were in the building!

                             NANNY

I was.

                            GRIMLY

We had the building completely surrounded! How did you get out?!

                             NANNY

I'm sure you're not calling because you miss me.

                            GRIMLY

Oh, yes! One of the hostages is missing! You confirmed eight
hostages, but only seven came down the back stairway.

                             NANNY

The other hostage is with me.

                            GRIMLY

You mean TWO of you left the building without being seen?!

                             NANNY

Officially, we were never there.

                            GRIMLY

What's the hurry to leave?!

                             NANNY

We have to catch the kidnapper.

                            GRIMLY

We have all four kidnappers in custody!

                             NANNY

But you didn't catch the inside man.

                            GRIMLY

Inside man?!

                             NANNY

Perhaps I should use the term inside WOMAN. She is also the
mastermind behind the kidnappings.

                            GRIMLY

How do you know all this?!

                             NANNY

(stops car at curb)

Listen, I'd love to stay and chat. But we have to follow the
money.

                            GRIMLY

The money! You're at the site of the ransom drop!

(to Sarg)

We need to get over to the ransom drop!

                             NANNY

Lieutenant, you need to stay out of this.

                            GRIMLY

You're telling the police to stay out of a ransom drop?!

                             NANNY

If you come here, you'll merely arrest the person picking up the
ransom.

                            GRIMLY

Of course we will! That's our job.

                             NANNY

But the guy who picks up the ransom is not the inside woman.

                            GRIMLY

How could you possibly know that?!

                             NANNY

Look, I have to go. But your time is best spent searching the
crime database for previous kidnap and ransoms of multiple
victims. This kidnapping was well rehearsed. You'll find that
this M.O. was done at least once or twice in other cities. You
need to find out what and who they all had in common. I'm
betting that the victims all went to private schools like ours
and they were all kidnapped while attending events away from the
school. The inside woman works as a secretary in the office or
as a teacher's aide.

(clicks off phone)

(end split-screen)

                            GRIMLY

She hung up on me again! That woman is infuriating!

                             SARG

But she's been right on the money so far, Lieu.

EXT NIGHT WIDE: CITY PARK

(Nanny, now dressed in business suit, drops a paper bag into the
trash can, walks away)

INT NIGHT TWO-SHOT: TOWN CAR

(Nanny enters, closes door, picks up night scope, peers out
windshield)

                             NANNY

What time is it?

                             KATIE

Ten thirty-two. Maybe she won't show up.

                             NANNY

She won't.

                             KATIE

Then why are we waiting here?

                             NANNY

Because she's going to hire another flunky, like those loosers
who were guarding you. And she'll send him to pick up the
ransoms.

                             KATIE

(points)

Here comes someone on a bicycle.

                             NANNY

Right on time.

EXT NIGHT POV: CITY PARK

(view through night scope: kid stops bicycle at trash can, looks
around, pulls plastic bag from trash can, drops it in his bike
basket, speeds away)

EXT NIGHT MONTAGE: CITY STREETS, SIDEWALKS, ALLEYS, FENCES

(Kid rides at top speed all downhill to the harbor, finally
stops in alley next to a diner, waits in darkness. Moments
later, Nanny's town car pulls to curb a block away)

INT NIGHT TWO-SHOT: TOWN CAR

                             NANNY

(stops while looking off to the left, points to cell phone
screen)

He's in that alley across the way.

                             KATIE

You put a GPS locator in our ransom?

(phone rings)

                             NANNY

(nods, pushes button on dash-mounted phone)

Nanny speaking.

                            GRIMLY

Bellamy! Where are you? I'm here at the park and you're not!

                             NANNY

(peering through night scope)

I'm down at the river.

                            GRIMLY

The river?! What are you doing down at the river?!

                             NANNY

This is where the inside woman is going to make her getaway. If
you want to make an arrest, it will be at the boat launch at
Biltmore Avenue. What did you find out about the other
kidnappings?

                            GRIMLY

You must be psychic, Bellamy! There were three previous multiple
kidnappings with this same M.O..

                             NANNY

All of them were in large cities with access to harbors or
rivers.

                            GRIMLY

You ARE psychic! How could you possibly know that?!

                             NANNY

That's how she gets away without being stopped at police
roadblocks.

                            GRIMLY

(reads)

The previous kidnappings were in Seattle, St Louis and Norfolk,
Virginia. All have access to water! And you knew it was a woman.

                             NANNY

In the previous kidnappings, she hired four flunkies to do the
kidnapping and then left them high and dry without paying them.

                            GRIMLY

I know how you know so much, Bellamy! YOU are this inside woman!

                             NANNY

Nice try, Lieutenant. If you look at the dates for those
previous kidnappings, you'll see that I was in the army serving
in Afghanistan. Keep looking. You'll find that one of the
suspects in those previous kidnappings worked in the same
private school as the kidnap victims. That's how she knew which
of the students came from the richest families and when they
would all be at an outside event.

(click)

(end split-screen)

                            GRIMLY

She hung up on me again! That is really irritating! Head for the
river. Lights and sirens!

EXT NIGHT POV: BOAT LAUNCH DOCKS

(Night vision scope scans the boats tied up to the dock. One
boat's engine is highlighted)

                             NANNY

(points)

That one there.

                             KATIE

That's the getaway boat?

                             NANNY

Yes.

                             KATIE

How do you know?

                             NANNY

This night vision scope sees hot objects brighter than cold
ones. The engine on that one is warmed up and ready for a
getaway.

(offers scope to Katie)

                             KATIE

(scans boats with scope)

Cool.

(points scope at Nanny's face)

                             NANNY

(points)

Take cover. Things are going to happen quickly.

(Lights and sirens in the distance, Nanny and Katie hide in a
nearby boat.)

                             KATIE

(focuses on the dark female figure running toward them carrying
the plastic bag with ransoms)

That's Mrs Barrett! She's the new secretary in the school
office! I thought it was kind of odd that she would take a job
as a waitress at the country club!

                             NANNY

How did she get you outside to the kidnappers?

                             KATIE

She told me that Daddy had come back from Africa.

EXT NIGHT WIDE: BOAT DOCK

(As Barrett runs down the dock, a snake-like water hose rises up
from its coil and wraps around the plastic bag just under
Barrett's hand as she passes by, snagging it and pulling it from
her hand. The bag lands on the dock. Two steps later, when
Barrett tries to stop and turn toward the bag, she appears to be
pushed into the river. As she swims back to the dock and climbs
out, Grimly's hand grabs the back of her collar)

                            GRIMLY

You're under arrest for kidnap and ransom. Anything you say can
and will be used against you in a court of law.

                             SARG

(picks up plastic bag, digs through it)

Here's the trash bag from the park. It looks like several small
packets of hundred dollar bills. Looks like we caught her
red-handed, Lieu.

                            GRIMLY

You have a right to remain silent. Say, where's Bellamy?

                            BARRETT

I don't know any Bellamy.

                            GRIMLY

Not talking to you. Didn't Bellamy say she was here at the boat
launch, Sarg?

                             SARG

That's what she said.

                            BARRETT

Who's Bellamy?

                             SARG

(Picks up white card from the dock)

What's this?

(reads card)

It's a web site address: www.spook911.org.

                            GRIMLY

That's got to be Bellamy! She was a spook in Delta Force.

                            BARRETT

Funny you should say that. I just felt somebody push me into the
river. But when I looked, noone was there. Maybe it was a spook!

                             SARG

There's no such thing as a spook.

INT NIGHT TWO-SHOT: TOWN CAR

(Nanny and Katie enter and close doors, fasten seat belts)

                             KATIE

Is it okay if I talk now?

                             NANNY

(drives away)

Yes.

                             KATIE

Is it okay if I smile?

                             NANNY

(drives away)

No, you're still grounded for two more days.
