HANDS 6'?m1f Monologue: self-control, sin, condemnation

(enters with hands in pockets, cross to C, turns to audience)

I'd like to talk to you about Romans seven.

(closes mouth, speaks with mouth closed, muffled, struggles)

Let me out. Let me out.

(looks left and right)

What was that?

(shrugs)

Anyway, as I was about to say, in Romans chapter seven, Apostle
Paul talks about....

(closes mouth, speaks with mouth closed, muffled, struggles)

Let me out. Let me out.

(looks left and right)

What was that? Did you hear anything? I would have sworn I heard
someone talking.

(closes mouth, speaks with mouth closed, muffled, struggles)

Let me out. Let me out.

(looks left and right)

I did. I heard something. You heard it, didn't you?

(closes mouth, speaks with mouth closed, muffled, struggles)

Let me out. Let me out.

(looks left and right)

Where is that coming from?!

(right hand flies out of pocket, flies in circle around
shoulder, then to near right ear, thumb and fingers form a hand
puppet)

RIGHT: I suppose you thought you could exclude US from the
conversation, huh, buddy?!

(left hand flies out of pocket, flies in circle around shoulder,
then to near right ear, thumb and fingers form a hand puppet)

LEFT: Yeah, we know what you're trying to do!

(looks alternately at each hand, then to audience)

MOUTH: This is not happening.

RIGHT: What did I tell you? She's in a state of denial.

LEFT: You can't just pretend that we don't exist!

(looks alternately at each hand, then to audience)

MOUTH: What is going on here?!

RIGHT: What's going on here is that you were going to have a
discussion about Romans seven WITHOUT including US!

LEFT: Of all the nerve.

MOUTH: Who are you?!

RIGHT: Who are we?!

LEFT: Who are we?!

RIGHT: (approaches left) Did you hear that?

LEFT: We're her own hands and she doesn't recognize us.

MOUTH: That's ridiculous! Hands can't talk!

(left and right hands look at each other, then to face, then to
audience, take turns laughing to audience, then to face)

MOUTH: Alright, what do you want from me?!

RIGHT: Romans chapter seven is all about self-control.

MOUTH: That's right. I was reciting Romans seven because I...
because I have... issues with self-control.

RIGHT: You're not the only one who has trouble with
self-control, you know.

LEFT: We can get into just as much trouble as you can.

RIGHT: So, don't you think WE should be involved in this
discussion?!

MOUTH: Well, I'm sorry, I had no idea you could discuss
ANYTHING.

LEFT: Typical!

MOUTH: Alright. What is there about Romans seven you'd like to
discuss?

RIGHT: I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do
not do, but what I hate I do.

LEFT: And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law
is good.

RIGHT: As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is
sin living in me.

LEFT: I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my
sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I
cannot carry it out.

RIGHT: For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil
I do not want to do--this I keep on doing.

LEFT: Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I
who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

RIGHT: So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil
is right there with me.

MOUTH: Well, I have the same struggles. It's not just about what
the two of you DO, it's also what I SAY. In fact, what I say can
get us into a lot more trouble that what you two do.

LEFT: She's got a point there.

RIGHT: Well, maybe. But what are we going to do about it?

MOUTH: No need to do anything?

LEFT: What's that?

RIGHT: What is she talking about?

MOUTH: It's already been done FOR us.

LEFT: What has?

MOUTH: Romans 8. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for
those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the
law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and
death.

RIGHT: Wait a minute! I never got that memo!

LEFT: Me either. Never heard a word about it!

MOUTH: For what the law was powerless to do in that it was
weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in
the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he
condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous
requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not
live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.
Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds
set on what that nature desires; but those who live in
accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the
Spirit desires.

RIGHT: See?! This is typical!

LEFT: I suppose everybody knows this stuff but us!

RIGHT: Typical.

LEFT: You know why we always get left out?

MOUTH: Why?

RIGHT: Because the mouth lives right next to the ears.

LEFT: And WE live way down at the ends of the arms. And half the
time we end up in the pockets where we can't hear anything!

RIGHT: I'm getting fed-up with the lack of communication around
here!

LEFT: (into left ear) Now hear this, Now hear this. When you
hear the gospel, the least you can do is pass it on to the other
body parts.

RIGHT: (into right ear) Drop me a postcard. How about an email?

(exiting)

LEFT: Here we were wallowing in our own condemnation of Romans
chapter seven...

RIGHT: ...Then we find out that there's another chapter. Chapter
eight.

LEFT: Nobody ever told US about the spirit of life!

RIGHT: Not even a post-it note on the refrigerator. Nothing.
